The Mystery Of Adolf Hitler’s Death

Irving Wallace’s 1985 novel “The Seventh Secret” is an alternate history of Adolf Hitler having survived after April 30, 1945 when he reportedly committed suicide, together with Eva Braun, whom he married shortly before he committed suicide. Hitler’s alleged survival after World War II has found another vehicle for its comeback: another book, this time factually presented, by Simon Dunstan and Gerrard Williams.

Argentina: Haven for Fugitive Nazi Criminals

Grey Wolf: The Escape of Adolf” refutes the commonly accepted explanation that Hitler shot himself and gave Braun cyanide in a double suicide ritual when the then Soviet Army was reported to be advancing to Berlin to liberate the city. According to Dunstan and Williams, there is overwhelming evidence that suggests the Fuhrer and Braun did not die but escaped to Argentina instead.

At that time, Argentina was the place to go for fugitive Nazi war criminals, the subject of many stories, fact and fiction, which somehow sounded plausible for the scenario that “Grey Wolf: The Escape of Adolf” presents. “The House on Garibaldi Street,” written by Isser Harel, was about the 1960 capture of Hitler’s henchman Adolf Eichmann by Israel’s Mossad operatives on Garibaldi Street in Argentina.

No Grave Found

Argentina was where Ante Pavelić, Dr. Josef Mengele, Josef Schwammberger, Dinko Sakic, Franz Stangl, Erich Priebke, and Gerhard Bohne fled to after the war, lived under assumed names, and prospered economically until they were caught, tried, and convicted. That’s how Dunstan and Williams based their theory that Hitler would automatically flee to Argentina because all his cohorts were already there.

Because no grave has been found of Hitler’s or Braun’s, speculations have always been around to counter the official findings issued by the Allies of Hitler’s death which stated that the Fuhrer’s and Braun’s bodies were doused in gasoline, set alight in the garden of the Reich Chancellery, after which the remains were interred somewhere undisclosed. The lone surviving witness to that was Hitler’s radio operator.

The Lone Witness’ Account

According to Rochus Misch, now 94 years old, he was in the room right next door when Hitler shot himself and while he did not hear the killing shot, he saw Hitler slumped with his head on the table, and Braun sitting in the sofa’s corner, dead, with her knees pulled up to the chest. Historians have held up Misch as a credible source. But British historian Guy Walters branded Dunstan and Williams “2,000% rubbish.”

Yet despite the eye witness account of Misch, the mystery of Hitler’s death has remained, primarily because none of those in the bunker with the Fuhrer heard that shot which, from Misch’s account, killed Hitler. Hitler’s personal secretary, Martin Bormann, and Hitler’s Minister for Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, were both present when the bodies of Hitler and Braun were drenched in gas and set alight.

The Search for Hitler’s Corpse

But Bormann disappeared and has never been found dead or alive and Goebbels was confirmed to have committed suicide by the Soviet Army’s intelligence unit, the SMERSH, headed by Gen. Aleksandr Anatolevich Vadis. The SMERSH did not find Hitler’s body, so Josef Stalin sent the Chief of Soviet Security and Secret Police, Lavrentiy Pavlovich Beria, to conduct another search for evidence that Hitler committed suicide.

On May 3, 1945, the German Vice Admiral Hans-Erich Voss went to the bunker and identified the corpses of the Goebbels children. A man’s body was found that same day, with diagonally combed hair, a small moustache, and darned socks. The SMERSH concluded Hitler couldn’t possibly have worn darned socks so they declared that the body wasn’t Hitler, albeit how that body was found in the bunker was never explained.

Flushing Down Hitler

The next day, the bodies of Hitler and Braun were found in the garden together with the remains of a puppy and a German Alsatian dog. The bodies were taken to northeast Berlin, in Buch, and were checked for dental records. Vadis concluded one of the bodies was that of Hitler. Stalin was informed three days later that Hitler’s body had been found. But can we believe the Russians?

The Kremlin had claimed the body was buried underneath the army’s Magdeburg parade ground in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Hitler’s jaws were kept by the SMERSH, and the Soviet Secret Police was in custody of Hitler’s cranium. Both were discovered in the archives of the now defunct U.S.S.R. In the 1990s, Russian authorities said Hitler’s body was exhumed, burned, and the ashes flushed down the sewage system.
